The humble storey of NCB Roorkee the brain child of eldest N C Jain amongst the three brothers in the helm of affairs began in the early 1950s with meager investment of s. 10,000-00 partially borrowed from relatives in its infant days NCB was aptly popular as an engineering stores dealing in right from gem clips tp sports goods besides engineering books catering local students of Thomason College of Civil Engineering turned University of Roorkee now I.I.T. The turning point in the history of NCB, switching over to a publishing venture, came just incidentally with NCB’s maiden publication “Plain and Reinforced Concrete” by due Jai Krishna doyan of Earthquake Engineering and O. P. Jain father of structural engineering in India. Unsurprisingly, the first print order ran only 500 with retail price-tag of Rs. Seven and eleven anna. Little did one had imagined that such modest beginning would someday grow-up to become a premier publishing house and so widely acclaimed an imprint in the specialized field of Engineering an Technology.
As regards business model and academic standard of works brought out by NCB strategically the focus is on text-cum-reference in an authoritatively domain rather than supplementary reading. To promote physical exports a joint publishing programme keenly interested by overseas publishers was once dropped amid negotiations.
